The Salt Spring Chamber and Tourism Salt Spring are working with local government and community groups to “lead the charge” in green tourism by working with B & B owners to install Electric Vehicle charging stations on Salt Spring Island.
Salt Spring Island now claims to have the most EVs per capita of any region in Canada. They are openly inviting EV owners from California, Oregon, Washington and BC to visit and take advantage of a network of charging stations across the island.
Although the Island has long had a reputation as the home of environmentalists, writers, musicians, artists and organic gardeners, the focus on EVs began last year with the installation of a Sun Country Highway Level II charger at ArtSpring, the island’s art and culture theatre. Transition Salt Spring (TSS), a local environmentally-focused organization, spearheaded the charger installation project, with the philosophy "build it and they will come." And as it turns out, they did come with locals and tourists using the charger on a daily basis.
Now, TSS, the Capital Region District (CRD) and the Salt Spring Chamber of Commerce have joined forces to subsidize the installation of Level II chargers at local B&Bs. Additional programs are in place to assist hotels and other destinations across the island, providing a reliable charging infrastructure for visiting tourists.
Say goodbye to range anxiety. Salt Spring is the ultimate location for an EV. The climate is one of the most moderate in Canada, where snow is a rare occurrence, and palm trees and bamboo thrive. The moderating effect of the ocean creates a micro-climate, providing an ideal year-round temperature for the batteries. This makes the 150 km range that most current EV brands deliver, a worry-free driving experience on the island.
I can tell you from personal experience, that you won't be disappointed with a visit to the island. EVs and Salt Spring are a match made in heaven.
