Although there are many good things to say about switching to winter tires, such as increased traction and control in cold winter weather, there is a price to pay in range.
Summer tires designed for electric vehicles are lighter and have very low rolling resistance. This adds to the quiet nature of EVs and at the same time works to increase range by as much as 10%.
Although winter tires are the safe choice for the cold winter season, the increase in tire sound is noticeable as is the predictable drop in range.
I find it disappointing that there are no EV specific winter tires on the market here. But even with the downsides, regular winter tires are still the smart choice for peace of mind.
