The media has been a-buzz since the confirmation of the Tesla Gigafactory site just outside of Reno Nevada. We've all read that it will be huge. Really HUGE! Tesla has released artist drawings of what the factory should look like. This has led to a lot of speculation on how 'huge' this factory will actually be.
The Reno Gazette-Journal published pictures of construction work at the site in early January 2015. It is very impressive to see how much has been done on site since ground was broken six months ago. Some images from the Reno Gazette-Journal clearly show two floors under construction.
The Tesla Gigafactory is believed to be around 3535 ft x 1414 ft and cover 10 million square feet based on two floors. EV Obsession took this info and compared the square footage to other well known buildings to help convey the scale of this massive project. Graphics were created to compare the Tesla Gigafactory with the Boeing Factory, Dallas Cowboys Stadium, the US Capitol and a banana. For myself this was helpful but only somewhat as I’ve never seen any of these buildings except for one more illustrated - a football field. Now a football field I have been to.
So armed with that, I had a little play in photoshop to merge the scaled Tesla Gigafactory and football field beside each other. Next step was to fly virtually over Edmonton Alberta where we live and comparatively scale the football field with others in the city. Got it - now lets have some fun. Let’s see how much space would be needed in downtown Edmonton to make way for the Tesla Gigafactory….. "No way! That can’t be right! Let’s check that football scaling again - no it’s about right. Man - that’s MASSIVE"!!!
So with that, I’ve compiled some more images. Have a look at this album of other Canadian cities featuring the Tesla Gigafactory.
One can never be too sure of the future, but one thing I am sure of is that Tesla and Panasonic are not just 'playing' at this project!
