Many phase two chargers on the market have been simplified to save on the cost of production. I have seen many without any protection for the J1772 plug. This is the part of the charger that plugs into your car.
Why is this important? Chargers are exposed to insects, dirt, dust, rain and even snow. Without protection your J1772 plug can become a nest for spiders, clogged with dirt or even become corroded. This can cause a number of issues and could even damage your car.
To the rescue, Joel Clemens, a founding member of the Golden Horseshoe Electric Vehicles association. He has successfully printed, and subsequently manufactured, dummy inlets that can be mounted alongside your charger to project your J1772.
I bought two of these recently and I am happy I did. When installing them I found spiders nesting in my outdoor charger’s plug.
So my tip for today is to check your charger to see if it has protection built in. If not, you can contact Joel directly through his blog at http://erroneus.myevblog.com for the perfect solution.
