Last week for example, it was a beautiful but windy day.
The forecast called for thunderstorms, but after some rain clouds blew through, the sky cleared up to a brilliant blue, dotted by white puffy clouds racing across from horizon to horizon. Yes, it was quite windy – but how many of these days will we have left to ride without cold-weather gear?
We needed to grab a few things at the local grocery store, so we hitched up the doggy ride for Wally, hopped on our Styriette pedelec bikes and headed out. The route is slightly uphill and we were headed straight into the wind that was blowing at 25-30km per hour.
And here is why I ride an e-bike. Aside from a bit of wind-burn on my cheeks, it wasn’t a problem at all. Most folks would have chosen to drive the 3.5 km to the store, even without the wind. But not us. It really is a great feeling to be out there, getting exercise and enjoying the weather rather than hiding from it.
Since it was also Wally’s birthday, we made a trip over to the local dog park on our way home. On the way back from there, we were once again heading uphill into the wind when a much younger, more energetic road-bike rider came along, hunched over his handlebars and pedaling hard to pull up behind me and pass. When he finally pulled along-side he looked over at my electric-assist pedelec bike and said “Oh, now I see why you were able to keep going so strong.” And I just smiled.
